Hippo Cup Cozy


You will need:
Circular needles or DPNs
Sewing up needle
Button
Crochet hook

Yarn:
Blue
White
Pink
Black

Pattern:
Body:

Measure your cup first, depend on your gauge cast on needed amount of stitches. I had 23 cm diameter and I casted on 66.
Join for knitting in the round. Purl 5 rows in the round.
To make the opening for the handle, start working your rows back and forth:
1 row: K
2 row: P
Repeat 1 and 2 rows(stockinette stitch) to the next part of the handle. Switch rows - on the RS - purl and WS - knit for 5 rows. Cast off. Leave the end of the string about 10 inches for button loop.

Loop: with crochet hook chain 6 loops, go back on them with sc, fasten off.
Sew a button.

Knit ears, teeth, eyes and attach it to the “body”.

Ear Blue part (4 pieces)
Cast on 2 St.
Row 1: KFB, KFB.
Row 2: P.
Row 3: KFB, K2, KFB.
Row 4: P.
Row 5: K.
Row 6: P.
Repeat row 5 and row 6 two more times.
Row 11: 2 tog, K2, 2 tog.
Row 12: P.
Row 13: (2 tog) 2 times.
Row 14: P2.
Row 15: Bind off.

Ear Pink part (2 pieces)
Cast on 2 St.
Row 1: KFB, KFB.
Row 2: P.
Row 3: K.
Row 4: P.
Row 5: (2 tog) 2 times.
Row 6: Bind off.

Sew pink piece on the RS of the Blue piece and then those two blue pieces together. Repeat for another ear.

Eyes:
Cast on 14 sts.
Work stockinette stitch for 5 rows.
Row 6: K2Tog, K5, and turn work; leave remaining 7 St on needle.
Row 7: Working with the 6 St closest to end of needle, P2Tog, P2, P2Tog.
Row 8: BO 4 Sts, and trim remaining yarn to 24 inches. Use large needle to weave yarn through back of piece to beginning of reserved 7 St.
Row 9: Working with reserved 7 St, K5, K2Tog.
Row 10: P2Tog, P2, P2Tog.
Row 11: BO 4.

With a black string and crochet hook, go around with a slip stitch, if you want to embroider blue pupil  and then glue a wiggly eyes on it.

Teeth (2 pieces)
Cast on 6 sts.
Work 8-9 rows in stockinette stitch.
Bend it in the middle and sew a top part (you can sew back sides too if you like it)

Finishing your piece:
Use a crochet hook and slip stitch moth and nostrils, sew all part on it!
Ta-Da! Your hippo ready to keep your tea warm and your hands save!
